Realistic Face - Step by step

Description

Done with a mouse in PS CS2.
Used a reference photo.

Step 1 - Firstly I filled in the basic head shape (It may look dodgy because ususally hair covers it up). I always start with sketching the nose using the burn and dodge tool to create basic lines. I began by using a thin burn tool to create the outlines of the nose and gradually moving to a thicker brush to add shadows and depth (as demonstrated on the right).

Step 2 - I moved on to the lips. (Create new layers for different colored layers) Using a pen tool I created the shape of the lips and filled it with color.

Step 3 - Again using the burn and dodge tool I added shadows, lights and depth to the lips. I played around with the options. For example changing the dodge tools range to highlights gives you a nice light reflection on the lips.

Step 4 - I went back to my skin layer and started adding more shadows around the mouth and the nose. Somewhat happy with the result I sketched the basic shape of the eyes and brows.

Teeth are easy to make, again with burn and dodge, just remember that teeth aren't completely white.

Using pen tool, I cut the unneccesary skin to create a defined jaw.

Step 5 - Using pen tool (change the settings to pen pressure for more fluid lines) I went over the original lines in a new layer and smudged them. I created 2 new layers; one for the pupils and the other for the eyewhite.

Since I'm using a mouse and hair and fur are a huge bother, I use custom brushes for lashes and eyebrows (available on deviantart if you bother to search).

Step 6 - Again using the dodge, burn and smudge I add depth, shadows and light reflections to the pupils and the area around the eyes. The next logical step was to create a jawline ( with a little of trial and error).

Step 7 - Now I basically have everything, but she still need more shadows and light reflections to create contrast.

Step 8 - Added even more shadows and such to bring out the nose and eyes. Also I created another layer for skin spots because skin isn't that smooth. (Spot brushes can be found on Deviantart). Set the layers opacity to 20% so it will smooth in with the skin. AND DONE!

Hope this helped or not.
